Marymass Eggheads

As the Marymass Folk Festival in Irvine edges towards its 50th anniversary celebrations in August of this year, long time club and festival organiser Joyce Hodge thought it would be a good idea to get a team together for Eggheads, where teams are invited to challenge “the finest quiz brains in Britain” in front of the TV cameras. The result was that The Marymass Mob featured on the BBC programme on the 20th July.

When this particular programme was being filmed, Eggheads were also filming a series of ‘celebrity specials’. Feedback from a couple of the camera and sound crew was that The Marymass Mob edition felt more like a celebrity event than some of the others.

A couple of the Eggheads admitted to a strong interest in folk music and seemed very happy to pose for photographs – despite their obvious discomfort at facing such formidable opponents. Given that the episode might be replayed on Listen Again or YouTube for years to come, we won’t reveal the result, other than to say it was an edge of the seat event that may go down in broadcasting history!

The Marymass Mob was made up of some familiar faces from the Scottish folk scene - Rab Noakes, John Weatherby, Kris Koren, Fraser Bruce and Stewart Durham. Pete Heywood was ‘on the bench’ as the reserve in case anyone did a runner.
