RALLION - One For Sorrow |
||||
A folk-rock album, tastefully done, with a singer who might almost be Maddy Prior. In fact it was only a late look at the sleeve notes which made me realise the driving rhythms are powered by no more than bodhran and various stringed instruments. And singer Marieke McBean has brought Dutch and other European songs and styles to the repertoire, but it all coalesces into a clearly Scottish whole that's helped by a good smattering of Burns and old favourites like' As I Roved Out' and 'Cold, Haily, Windy Night' There's tunes Scottish and Norwegian. Twelve tracks, all toe-tappers, with double fiddle lead. This would be a band to book if you are planning a raucous dance-night. Bob Harragan |
