VARIOUS ARTISTS - Celtic Airs And Reflective Melodies
Greentrax Recordings CDGMP8015

Greentrax have done it again, with another fine compilation CD, this time of slow airs in an attempt to redress the balance of why there are no albums comprising only this well loved type of tune.

And it does not disappoint. Taken from their back catalogue, many of Greentrax’s finest artists are here – The Whistlebinkies, Hamish Moore, Willie Hunter and Violet Tulloch, Ian Hardie, Tony McManus, Fiddlers’ Bid – the list goes on. And some of the tunes are achingly beautiful, from Ceolbeg’s opening Lord Galloway’s Lamentation, to Jean Yelland by The Cast and The Burning Bing by Wendy Stewart. But the highlight for me is one of my all time favourite tunes, Willie Hunter’s Love O’ Da Isles, which always transports me to a dreamy place, and reaches the places that other tunes just can’t. Carlsberg don’t do slow airs, but…..

A lovely album that reflects well the gentler side of the Scottish tradition.
