VARIOUS ARTISTS - Younger Than That Now
Fat Cat Records FATCD023

To celebrate the 70th birthday of Dylan, here we have a 2 CD collection of covers, some specially recorded for this album, and others previously available – some of a significant vintage (for example Tony Capstick’s 1972 recording of To Ramona) . A more recent gem is Chris and Kellie While’s take on Mississippi. Clive Gregson and Christine Collister are still keeping a respectable distance, being on separate disks (Tomorrow Is A Long Time and Forever Young respectively – both cracking takes).  Martin Simpson offers Mr Tambourine Man to his usual aplomb and Steve Tilston manages to stamp his own authority on Love Minus Zero/No Limit.  Jez Lowe gives us Changing Of The Guards supported by some barely disguised guest musos in ensemble.

Like many double compilations, this could have been easily condensed into a single, but as it’s for a particularly good cause (Oxfam), it would seem churlish to grumble in this instance. The whole project has been stage managed by Chris Euesden , who also manages to sneak in a few of his own contributions in various guises (Blonde on Bob, Costanza, Sara Dean and production credits for Blonde on Bob, Phil Cerny, Sara Dean and Ewan McLennan. It’s been nice to reacquaint myself with Gary Hall and Steve Phillips, both of whom I haven’t seen hide nor hair of since I moved back to Scotland (and that wasn’t yesterday).  All in, this is a well balanced collection by weel kent faces, and for the best of causes – so on every count I commend it to you all.
