BEAMONT & LEE - Boxes Fiddle & Drum
Private Label

This is an ‘as live’ recording of two players who have been regulars at sessions in the Plymouth area. Phil Beamont plays the melodeon and has a history of playing for Morris, though has been heavily influenced by the music of Co. Kerry. Peter Lee plays the fiddle and bodhrán and, although English, also has strong influences from Scots and Irish traditional music. The two have been playing together for years and decided that now was the time to share a sample of the tunes they play.

There is lots of Irish music here, particularly the slides and polkas of the Sliabh Luachra area in Cork and Kerry. There are also a few old English dance tunes, with a couple of Scottish numbers thrown in as well. It is mostly well known stuff, fairly standard session fare, though it is played a bit differently – you can tell it is being played by English musicians, there is often a bit of a Morris swing to it.

The two play well enough together, as on Slockit Light, where the fiddle takes a harmony line and the accordion the tune. They don’t feel the need to employ accompanists or other guests to fill out the sound – this very much is what it says on the tin. And they have taken the ‘warts and all’ approach – they aren’t the most flashy players and the playing isn’t perfect. But it is a good record of the repertoire of two session players who want to preserve their tunes.
