Hobgoblin acquires Scayles Music in Edinburgh

An Edinburgh institution, Scayles Music, is a traditional music shop that has been trading for over 25 years. Earlier this year, its owner retired and Scayles has now become part of the Hobgoblin Music chain.

Pete McClelland from Hobgoblin told us: “George of Scayles Music Edinburgh contacted me in mid-2018 to see if I would be willing and also able to continue his work and take over the reins at Scayles, a thriving Edinburgh music shop in George Square near the university, and a company he had run by himself for many years. I said yes, but that I could not take over immediately as at that time we were in the middle of absorbing Soar Valley Music, the education and percussion specialists, and as a result, not flush with money.”

“In the end a deal was made, and Scayles joined the rest of the Hobgoblin chain in April 2019, bringing the total number of UK shops up to nine (we have a US shop in Redwing MN also). We jumped in at the deep end with the busy Edinburgh Festival starting a couple of months later, but the team in Edinburgh led by Doug Brown and William Anderson did a sterling job and sailed through the rush.”

“George has a very personal philosophy about what a music shop should be, and knows the magic of how to display the instruments in just the right setting. I learned a lot as his apprentice, and am still learning - as you always do. In the end, I think both Hobgoblin and Scayles will learn from each other’s culture and it will make us stronger for the future now we are together. We are currently in the middle of unifying our computer and till systems, which is no fun at all, but we are nearly there…”
