Doyle is a long-established and well-respected player and teacher and this material bears witness to his skill in pointing up tunes with judicious articulation and ornamentation. One point – it says that the tunes are also given in ABC notation. But this is not the ABC notation with which most musicians will be familiar as a means of sending tunes over the internet. Instead, it’s a codification of a system of putting the letter name beneath its note in the score. This will make the book even more useful to players with burgeoning score-reading ability or who are trying to improve this skill. Nicely printed, this book contains real riches. Highly recommended – and not just for pipers!
