ROBBIE O’CONNELL, AOIFE CLANCY & DONAL CLANCY - The Clancy Legacy
AODOROCD101

This is a very pleasant offering from these three first cousins, all card carrying members of the legendary Clancy family. All three are individually renowned and have played together in various combinations, but first in this incarnation relatively recently, and it is immediately obvious to the listener that their shared musical heritage works on a number of levels.

Robbie O’Connell, who first came to my attention when he introduced Kilkelly to us on the BBC’s Bringing It All Back Home series in 1991, is a nephew of the famous brothers and supplies the key male vocals and second guitar accompaniment . Dónal Clancy, son of Liam, is, on this showing, a virtuoso guitarist with a confident vocal delivery also. Aoife Clancy (from Cherish The Ladies), daughter of Bobby Clancy, is the female vocalist and has a mean delivery too. Together, they shine on this collection of trad and adapted trad songs and tunes.

The album kicks off with a tasteful reworking of A Jug Of Punch and skips between mostly Irish traditional songs and tunes, with one Scottish song (The Gallant Forty Twa) guilty by association. Personally I feel drawn to the tunes, which are mostly Dónal’s solo pieces, but I heartily recommend the whole album if you want an introduction to the new generation of Clancys.

All in all a very respectable debut from this, now US based, trio who I look forward to seeking out if they make it across this side of the pond.
