Angus Lyon - “Long Road” - KRL Records CDLDL1305

This year is proving to be a busy one for young accordion and piano player Angus Lyon.  Not only did he guest on the recent Canterach debut album (also through KRL Records); this month also sees the release of his Debut CD.  As one might expect from a non-singing musician, this CD is largely instrumental featuring only three songs, of which two are performed by non-other than John Wright.

For the most part ‘Long Road’ is in a reflective mood as Angus’s lilting and gentle style soothes the listener in a similar vein to Donald Shaw’s early work with Capercaillie.  No wonder then that he drafted ex-member and whistle player Marc Duff in to accompany him on a few tunes.  Other respected artists to be found on this CD are Wendy Weatherby and Fraser Spiers giving some indication of the high regard with which this young talent is held. When the album picks up the tempo during tunes such as Carmel Mahoneys and Johnny Muise, these sets of reels are played with dynamism and verve indicating that Angus is worthy of all the current attention.  Angus has written many of the tunes on this new CD and for a debut recording it’s an excellent and mature body of work.
