MIKE VASS & DAVE WOOD |
||||
An album by musicians as good as Malinky’s fiddler (Mike Vass) and guitar/bouzouki player (Dave Wood) is always to be welcomed, and this does not disappoint. Rather a short CD (only nine tracks) but full of variety and polish. As is to be expected, the bulk of the material is tunes, and these are a mixture of new and old, but Vass and Wood have a great ear for good material, and there are constant ear-tickling delights to discover. As also might be expected, the playing is superb and the arrangements well-thought out and enjoyable. They are aided by Damien O’Kane (vocals, banjo and guitars), James Lindsay (whose occasional warm-toned double bass contributions perfectly underpin the others) and Steve Fyvie (drums, percussion). I find it odd that they would have chosen to give one of the guests a solo track – The Hills of Donegal – not least because it comes with a new tune by O’Kane which isn’t a great improvement on the traditional ones. A small point, which doesn’t detract from an excellent pieces of work all round. Paul Burgess |
