BOTTLE BANK BAND - BOTTLE BANK BAND

BOTTLE BANK BAND - BOTTLE BANK BAND
Hooky Mat Records HMR023

Bottle Bank is one of the addresses in Newcastle of the legendary Tyneside fiddler, James Hill. It is therefore to be expected that tunes written and/or popularised by him figure prominently in this tour-de-force by a quartet of inheritors of his tradition – Sophy Ball, Chloe Jones, David Jones and Stewart Hardy. It will delight fans of multiple fiddles in general, though, and post Blazin’ Fiddles and Bellowhead (to name but two), who hasn't thrilled to the sound of massed cat-gut?

The standard of playing from the Bottle Bank Band is soaringly high and the range of what they turn their collective hand to is wide. There is enough evidence here of the interplay between Geordie fiddlers and those from the north of the border. Looking further afield, there is a strong American feel to tracks like Flatbush Waltz and Iles De La Madeleine. You can tell that these four have spent plenty of time playing together. They weave in and out of each other's themes with rare skill and dexterity.
