VARIOUS ARTISTS - Hobgoblin Music – 40 Years
Hobgoblin HOBCD040

Most of us might think of Hobgoblin primarily as purveyors of instruments and particularly for their splash of colour at festivals. They are certainly that, but they also have a select list of albums on their label. Those are represented here by the likes of Dogan Mehmet and Ollie King, who would sound good in any context. There is another strand to this celebration of 40 years in the business, though. So many gifted musicians have worked for them over those decades that you could easily fill a double CD with their output.

So Hobgoblin has chosen to cram a representative selection of what their staff have been up to over those 40 years onto one disc. As you would expect, the instruments sound wonderful and the whole collection is a delight. It is invidious to talk about favourites, but I love the two tracks from The Teds, and Pip Ives' take on The Tip Top Polka – close your eyes and you could be in Bacup.

It's part of a rich legacy. Here's to the next 40 years.
