The last couple of years have seen the emergence of some cracking Irish collectives, and this is no exception – it is exceptionally good. This group of session musicians have benefited from a mentoring scheme called Arts For All, which is a Belfast mentoring scheme that brings together budding and established musicians. Recorded over just two days, there’s a remarkable sense of cohesion about this recording. The fully instrumental album features a broad mix of modern and traditional tunes on, mostly, flute, fiddle, bouzouki and bodhrán, and all 12 tracks are of equal merit.

The fiddler, Ruadhrai O’Kane, delivers a sublime air (An Bacach Buidhe Na Leimne), but is equally at home playing faster jigs and reels. Desy Adams doesn’t contribute to every track, but never falters on the tracks where he features, especially the Idir Deighric ‘Gus Breo/King George IV/Launching The Boat set. Ryan O’Donnell’s bouzouki playing is steadfast throughout – and his guitar accompaniment is also solid. The fourth member of the ensemble is Paul Maguire, who contributes steady bodhrán to give backbone to the tunes, and does a sterling job. The CD is also packaged well, with extensive supporting notes for each set of tunes – mind you, the musicians look particularly grumpy in the pictures. Cheer up guys, you’ve made some great music here and this will make you a lot of new friends and lead to plenty of future work on this showing. A well presented outing, and produced with much skill by Dónal O’Connor.
