Boys of the Lough @ Girvan Folk Festival, 1990

The Boys of the Lough made several appearances at Girvan Folk Festival over the years. Organiser Pete Heywood had booked them many in Ayrshire and beyond including concerts at Auchincruive, Kilmarnock, Glasgow (Adelaides) and Newton Stewart. Their line-up at this time was Aly Bain, Cathal McConnell, Dave Richardson, Christie O'Leary and John Coakley, and this recording captures them in particulalry fine form. They were booked to appear as Boys of the Lough, primarily for the main Saturday evening concert, but invited to stay for the whole weekend, to participate on a more informal basis, to 'rub shoulders' and enjoy the sessions and the general ambiance of the event.

This recording is their concert set in the Girvan Academy (Saturday evening concert). They had previously performed in a 'parallel concert' in the less formal setting of The Kings Arms. The following day, Cathal McConnell and Tim O'Leary, Christie's brother, played an impromptu concert set (that is also in our archive). One song from that set is included below.

This recording is part of The Living Tradition Archive and is presented here for your enjoyment and as part of the process of documenting and indexing this archive. Feedback is welcome.

MAIN CONCERT - Boys of the Lough
